Does a boomerang really come back?
Yes — a returning boomerang really does come back, but only when it’s designed to return and thrown correctly. This is one of the most common questions beginners ask, and it’s also one of the biggest misconceptions. A boomerang isn’t magical or unpredictable; it follows the laws of physics. When thrown with the right technique and in suitable conditions, a returning boomerang will fly in a wide circle and come back toward the thrower.
The key to a boomerang’s return lies in aerodynamics and spin. Unlike a frisbee, a boomerang must be thrown almost vertically, usually tilted about 10–20 degrees from upright. Each arm of the boomerang is shaped like a wing. As the boomerang spins, the top arm moves faster through the air than the bottom arm, creating uneven lift. This difference in lift, combined with the spinning motion, causes the boomerang to curve sideways instead of flying straight. Over time, that curve becomes a full circular flight path.
Spin is more important than strength. Many beginners try to throw the boomerang as hard as possible, but a strong wrist snap that creates fast spin is far more important. Without enough spin, the boomerang won’t stay stable in the air and will usually crash to the ground early.
Wind also plays a crucial role. A light, steady breeze helps the boomerang stay aloft long enough to complete its circular flight. The best conditions for learning are gentle winds of around 5–15 km/h. Throwing with no wind makes returns harder, while strong or gusty wind can cause the boomerang to climb too high, stall, or return unpredictably. That’s why beginners should always throw into a light wind and avoid windy days.
It’s also important to understand that not all boomerangs return. Many traditional and modern boomerangs are designed for distance throwing or hunting and are meant to fly as far and as straight as possible. These boomerangs will never come back, no matter how well they are thrown. For learning, it’s essential to use a beginner-friendly returning boomerang, ideally made from foam or soft plastic. These materials fly more slowly, are more forgiving of mistakes, and are much safer.
For first-time throwers, the goal should not be catching the boomerang. A successful throw is one that returns in a smooth arc and lands safely nearby. Catching requires experience, timing, and confidence, and should only be attempted once consistent returns are achieved. Many instructors teach beginners to let the boomerang land until their control improves.
With practice, proper technique, and the right conditions, watching a boomerang arc gracefully through the sky and return is not only real — it’s one of the most satisfying moments in outdoor sport.
Why doesn’t my boomerang come back?
If your boomerang isn’t coming back, you’re not alone — this is the most common beginner problem. The usual cause is throwing the boomerang flat like a frisbee. A boomerang must be thrown almost vertically to work properly. Flat throws cause it to fly straight and crash.
Another key issue is spin. Boomerangs need lots of spin, not just power. A fast wrist flick is more important than throwing hard with your arm. Without enough spin, the boomerang won’t stay stable in flight.
Wind direction also matters. You should throw into the wind, not with it or directly sideways. Standing with the wind at your back almost guarantees failure.
Finally, check the type of boomerang you’re using. Beginner boomerangs are designed to fly slowly and forgive mistakes. Advanced or wooden boomerangs are much harder to control.
Fix your grip, throw nearly vertical, aim slightly across the wind, and focus on spin. With a few adjustments, most beginners start seeing returns surprisingly quickly.
Which way do I throw a boomerang?
The direction you throw a boomerang depends on the wind and whether the boomerang is right- or left-handed. For a right-handed boomerang, you should stand facing the wind, then throw about 30–45 degrees to the right of where the wind is coming from. Left-handed boomerangs are thrown in the opposite direction.
Never throw a boomerang straight into the wind. This causes it to climb too high and stall. Likewise, throwing with the wind makes the boomerang fly away and not return.
Before throwing, toss some grass into the air to see wind direction. Light, steady wind is ideal. If the wind is gusty or strong, it’s better to wait.
Direction control improves with experience, but beginners should focus on consistency. Pick a clear aiming point, keep your stance steady, and adjust slightly after each throw.
Understanding wind direction is one of the biggest breakthroughs in learning boomerang throwing. Once you get it right, returns become predictable and repeatable.
How do I throw a foam boomerang?
Hold the boomerang near the tip with the flat side facing away from you. Face into the breeze and aim 45° to the right of the wind. Throw it forward and upward like a
dart — keep your wrist vertical and snap it with a fast spinning motion. Never
throw it sidearm like a frisbee. Remember: spin counts more than power!
What does tuning mean?
Tuning means
adjusting the bend and twist of the blades to get the best flight for the
conditions. Bending the wings upward increases the height of the flight and
makes it hover more at the end. Bending the wings downward gives a lower,
longer flight path — good for stronger winds. Twisting the blades
anti-clockwise adjusts the spin rate and angle of attack. A little goes a long
way — make small adjustments and test after each one.
What are the best conditions for throwing?
Little to no wind is ideal — a gentle breeze is perfect. Never throw in strong or gusty wind as the boomerang will not fly predictably. A calm day on an open oval or parkgives the best results. The Outdoor Superang and OZzie Icerunner perform best in light wind; the Indoor Superang is designed for indoors with no wind at all.
My boomerang keeps going too high — what am I doing wrong?
You're probably throwing it too hard or at too steep an angle. Throw gently at first
and aim just above the horizon rather than straight up. Also check your tuning
— if the wings are bent too far upward, bend them down slightly to flatten the
flight path.
Can left-handed people throw a boomerang?
FlyingToyz Aussie Magic, OZzie Emu & OZzie Icerunner are designed for right-handed throwing. The Outdoor and Indoor Superang are ambidextrous, so the tuning determines left or right handed throwing. See Tuning
The wooden boomerangs are left or right determined by what you choose at check out.
